There are oodles of ways to congratulate a family when a new baby arrives. Although being spontaneous is often fun and shows thought, the couple can also end up with something they don't need. So, one of the easiest ways to get a good baby gift is to ask the couple what they need. You can do this one of several ways.
You might want to ask them really early - particularly if it's a first child. You can do this months before the baby even arrives, thus jumping onto the bandwagon quickly and being one of the first to deliver a gift. In contrast, you could decide to wait quite a bit and let them ease into their new situation. After a month or two, the gift giving tends to settle down and the couple may have a better idea of what they need.
Sometimes, couples also register. You can ask them, at any point along the way, if they've registered and where. Then, it will be easy to go to those locations (or to look online if they have a site) and select items that speak to them.
